Eyelid Surgery

Over 30 years of oculoplastic surgery experience has resulted in Dr. Hughes’ eyelid rejuvenation procedures changing dramatically in her search for surgical perfection. Thanks to new tools and techniques, such as the full and fractionated CO2 lasers and the newest fractionated erbium YAG laser, and fat transfer or fillers to the lower eyelid hollows, rejuvenation of the lower eyelids can be achieved without incisions, with more natural looking results, and decreased discomfort and downtime.

In addition, many of her upper eyelid rejuvenation patients consider an endoscopic brow lift with or without an upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) in Philadelphia for the most attractive and long lasting solution to their eye rejuvenation.

An Introduction to Laser Eyelid Surgery

Puffy, wrinkled eyelids simply represent the inevitable ravage of time. Firm structures that restrain the fat loosen, and the fat is allowed to push forward in the skin, as the cheek fat pad sags, leaving a hollow under the eyes. In addition, the crow’s feet wrinkles and lower and upper lid wrinkles progress as we lose elastic fibers in our skin over time. Laser eyelid surgery, or laser cosmetic blepharoplasty removes these telltale fatigue signs, and is often complemented with fat transfers or fillers to add volume to under eye hollows, or with BOTOX® in New Jersey and Philadelphia to improve the look of facial creases.

Laser resurfacing improves fine lines, pigmentation and skin texture. This is why dark circles are improved with laser resurfacing. It also avoids incisions, bleeding, misshapen eyelids, and the invasive nature of the older lower lid blepharoplasty methods. The laser heat treatment creates a controlled superficial burn which heals with tighter, thicker skin. With recent advances in post-op care, our New Jersey and Philadelphia blepharoplasty patients are back to work in 7-10 days in their makeup.

Why Is Laser Lid Surgery Better than Skin Incisions?

The real revolutionary advance in the lower lid blepharoplasty in New Jersey is the fact that there is no skin incision, and the crow’s feet wrinkles can be reduced dramatically. The older skin incision technique has a much higher risk of changing the shape and contour of the eyelid because it requires removal of skin and muscle, with re-draping of the remaining skin and muscle. This sometimes causes the white of the eye to be exposed above the retracted lower lid, and also the outer angle of the eyes to be rounded. There is also a higher incidence of ectropion (rolled out lower eyelid) when the incisional technique is chosen instead of laser.

 New Technology

The end result with a laser is a much more natural and youthful eyelid without a “done” appearance. Laser blepharoplasty has been made possible by new advances in technology. The CO2 pulsed laser has two interchangeable heads: a laser light scalpel and a laser skin resurfacing head. These two components combine for improved precision, comfort, and results. Results can be enhanced with other surgical procedures such as an endoscopic brow lift and/or midface lift, facial fat transfer or a face lift in Philadelphia.
