Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing removes the outer layers of skin, and tightens the deeper dermis of the skin, resulting in younger looking skin. It dramatically improves the appearance of:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Facial pigmentation
- Skin texture and tone
- Sagging or loose skin
Very recent and extraordinary advances in laser technology are now available for the patient that does not want to undergo the post operative care and downtime of the gold standard CO2 laser resurfacing procedure. Fractionated CO2 with the Fraxel re:pair®, and fractionated erbium laser technology with the Sciton® JOULE™ is now available for our New Jersey and Philadelphia patients.
Laser Skin Resurfacing – What to Expect
The laser heat treatment creates a superficial controlled burn which heals with tighter, thicker skin. With recent advances in post-op care, people are back to work in 7-10 days in their sunblock and makeup. Postoperative discomfort is like a bad sunburn, and requires frequent soaking and skin lubrication, but rarely requires more than over the counter pain relievers. It will take 3 months for the pink to fade, and sunblock will protect your investment, and still allow you to enjoy the sun. Your skin will look firmer and smoother, with much less pigmentation, like the skin you had when you were younger. Some people also combine BOTOX® in New Jersey and Philadelphia with laser skin resurfacing for further improvements in facial lines and wrinkles.
New Fractionated Laser Technology
FRAXEL RE:PAIR WITH FRACTIONATED CO2 LASER, AND THE SCITON JOULE FRACTIONATED ERBIUM LASER
Many patients that would greatly benefit from laser skin resurfacing avoid it because of the demanding post operative care and lengthy 3 month healing time with traditional CO2 laser. Fractionated technology does not remove the entire surface (epithelium) of the skin. Fractionated lasers can be custom designed to remove anywhere from 5-70% of the skin surface, allowing the remaining skin surface cells to fill in the laser spots much more quickly. In addition, the depth of penetration of these lasers can be designed to go up to 8-10 times deeper into the skin to promote deeper skin tightening in areas that are more wrinkled, or have more acne scarring.
The post operative sunburn sensation is much less than with traditional CO2, and because it is a partial laser burn the soaking and creaming of the skin is much less demanding. Coverup sunblock is applied at 7 days, and the post operative pinkness of the skin lasts 4-6 weeks on average.
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF FRACTIONATED LASER TECHNOLOGY?
Laser skin resurfacing will not provide the same level of improvement as surgical procedures such as a facelift in New Jersey. Your results will depend on your skin condition and your tolerance for downtime and required post op care. There is an amazing range of treatments available for you to discuss with Dr Hughes. Microlaser peels with deep fractionated passes can allow you to return to work in 4 days, and will provide a very nice result, and can be repeated at your convenience. This is often recommended in a series of 3 treatments.
